Alcohol Rehab Treatment Essentials

Welcome

There are certain things that everyone should know about alcohol rehab treatment. This knowledge should be limited just to those individuals who need treatment - but also their family and friends as well. To help understand what to expect during treatment - and how alcohol rehab helps the individual achieve and maintain sobriety - consider the following information.

Residential Alcohol Rehab vs. Outpatient Alcohol Rehab

The first thing to understand about alcohol rehab treatment is that there are two primary types of facility: residential and outpatient.

Residential alcohol rehab is designed to help individuals who need a place to focus solely on their recovery. This is includes those who find their home environment to be too much of a distraction - or filled with "triggers" that lead to alcohol abuse and addiction. With residential rehab treatment, the individual moves into the facility full time - and lives side-by-side with other recovering addicts.

Outpatient alcohol rehab is geared towards those individuals who are suffering from an alcohol addiction, but may not have a serious-enough problem to merit round-the-clock care. In addition, because individuals attend treatment for only a portion of each day, it gives them the ability to go to school, continue on with work or meet family obligations while under professional care.

How long does Alcohol Rehab Treatment take to Complete?

An alcohol rehab treatment program can last anywhere from one month to a year or longer - depending upon the severity of the individual's condition. Most programs last one to three months, and individuals should be skeptical of any program that claims "instant results" in only a couple of weeks. In order for an individual to complete the detox process and attend enough therapy sessions to where things begin to make sense, it will take at least a month (and probably longer).

How much does Alcohol Rehab Treatment Cost?

There are a number of different price points for alcohol rehab treatment. The end cost depends on the type of facility the individual attends and the length of their stay. Luxury alcohol rehab centers are the most expensive, with some costing in excess of several thousand dollars per month. Outpatient alcohol rehab tends to be less expensive - costing hundreds of dollars per week in many cities. In addition, outpatient alcohol rehab programs are more likely to be covered under insurance - helping ease the financial burden on the family even more.

What happens during Alcohol Rehab Treatment?

There are three primary components to most alcohol rehab treatment programs: alcohol detox, therapy and aftercare.

Alcohol detox. This is the "drying out" process, where the individual stops drinking in order to give the system a chance to detoxify. Although the individual may be subject to uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms during this period, it is an absolutely essential part of the recovery process. Completing detox means that the individual has overcome their physical addiction to alcohol and is "stable enough" to continue on with therapy and aftercare.

Alcoholism therapy. Group, individual and family therapy all help the individual address the root causes of their addiction - and build communication and life-skills that are necessary to live a sober life. Group therapy and family therapy are a means to talk openly and honestly about one's addiction - and gain support from fellow addicts, parents, siblings or adult children.

Aftercare. A recovering alcoholic who completes rehab still has a number of important challenges to face. Aftercare programs keep the individual on the path to recovery by offering support, structure and accountability through 12-step programs, follow up counseling, sober living and other varied means.
