Drug Rehab
Every day, thousands of people cross over from substance abuse into full-on drug addiction. For most, the stakes are incredibly high, as their dependence on cocaine, heroin, prescription medication or other substances puts their health, their relationships and even their families at risk.
When an individual hits “rock bottom” or comes to the realization that they are in dire need of professional help, drug rehab centers are there to turn things around.
The following represents a comprehensive overview of the drug rehab process, as well as a review of who needs these programs the most, and how these at-risk individuals can benefit from an addiction treatment program.
WHAT IS DRUG REHAB?
Drug rehab (or “drug rehabilitation”) is the process of helping an individual overcome their addiction to drugs. Drug addiction is comprised of both a physical and psychological addiction – and drug rehab addresses them both in full.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DRUG REHAB?
Although there exist a wide range of different treatment styles, the two predominant types of drug rehab are inpatient (or “residential rehab”) and outpatient.
-
Inpatient drug rehab. The individual moves into the facility full-time and receives constant care and attention from the treatment staff. The inpatient facility provides the individual with a “safe place” where they can focus solely on their recovery.
-
Outpatient drug rehab. Each day, the individual takes part in counseling, detox and other procedures, then returns home or to their sober living facility in the evening. An appropriate choice for those who need to attend work or school during treatment.
WHAT GOES ON DURING DRUG REHAB?
At top facilities such as Seasons Recovery Centers, there are three primary components to drug rehab: detox, counseling and aftercare.
Drug Detox. Addresses the physical addiction to drugs. Detox is the process of allowing the toxins that build up in the system during drug use to be flushed out with time. During drug detox the individual may experience withdrawal symptoms that, although non-life threatening, may cause relapse into drug use if not supervised by a professional.
Counseling. Family, individual and group counseling represent a mission to overcome the psychological addiction to drugs. During counseling, the individual will address the root causes behind their addiction and learn strategies for coping with life in a more productive, healthier manner. Group counseling allows the individual to share their experiences with other recovering addicts, and gain strength from the support (and stories) of others.
Aftercare. Aftercare programs help prepare the individual for life-after-rehab. Through 12-step programs and follow-up counseling, the recovering addict is given additional support and guidance as they adjust to the “real world” without drugs in their life.
HOW LONG DOES DRUG REHAB TAKE TO COMPLETE?
The length of a drug treatment program depends upon the facility as well as the seriousness of the individual’s addiction. Most rehab programs will take no less than a full month, with long-term drug rehab programs lasting upwards of a full year (Note: Beware of programs that offer a “quick fix” treatment that only lasts a number of days. These are NOT legitimate programs and will not help an individual maintain long-term sobriety).
WHAT TYPES OF ADDICTION ARE TREATED DURING DRUG REHAB?
The professionals at a drug rehab facility are equipped to handle a number of different types of drug addictions, including:
-
Heroin addiction
-
Cocaine addiction
-
Marijuana addiction
-
OxyContin addiction and Vicodin addiction
-
Crystal meth addiction
-
Stimulant addiction
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER A DRUG REHAB PROGRAM?
Any individual who is unable to stop using drugs on their own, or has seen their life come apart at the seams as a result of drug use should consider entering a program immediately.
In addition, family members need to be proactive if they believe that their loved one has developed a drug addiction. Waiting for things to get worse before contacting professionals is a mistake. Instead it is important to recognize the tell-tale signs of addiction and move in quickly before things deteriorate any further.
According to the experts at Seasons Recovery Centers, among the hallmark signs and symptoms of a drug addiction are:
