The Systemic Family Treatment Program at Seasons
In collaboration with renowned interventionist Wayne Raiter, Seasons Recovery Centers has developed a comprehensive addiction treatment program aimed at addressing the underlying issues of addiction both internal to the client but also in the system of relationships we call "family."
The Seasons System Family Treatment Program (SFT) addresses systemic relationship and family issues alongside the client's individual treatment. In a 90-day program family members are encouraged to participate as much as possible, both in person and by video teleconference in 15 days of residential treatment.
This work includes education, process and family therapy focusing on creating a healthy family system that no longer shames and that can respond to challenge and change, supporting each individual in the family to live their very best lives.
"I have been in treatment four times before this-I knew about "family day." But family day was just a token visiting day compared to this-- like watching a bunch of cars drive by in a parade. Seasons is like parking your car, opening the hood, taking out the engine, rebuilding it, and then going for a drive. I always knew some of the issues were there with my family, and when I was able to work with that, I got much better. I am not going to need to come back to treatment again. I have a system that surrounds me that is my treatment and I got that from this program."
The program address the issues of shaming and remorse, codependency, understanding the family system, neurobiology, addiction science, and the latest information available to addiction specialists on the nature of addiction and addiction treatment, the old and new rules of family behavior, and information and therapy specifically designed for each family.
The program is custom designed for each family and residential stays of up to 15 days for as many family members as possible are encouraged. This gives the Seasons Treatment Team the same kind of intensive time to work with family members as they have with the client in addiction.
Families come out of this program changed.
"It is as though a huge burden has been lifted from us. Thank you. Before we went through this our entire family was hostage to my son's heroin use. Every person's life was on hold, waiting to see how long he would stay clean. Now we see the fallacy of this, and we are all freer. He is clean but we will get through it whether he decides to stay clean or not, and we no longer wait for the phone to ring, or the next relapse. He is better and we are better. Thank you."
A main tenant of the program is that it is the family system, not the. individual, that needs treatment. The Seasons Team works a curriculum and process of intensive treatment to rebuild the family into a healthy, supportive and less shaming unit.
"This program is revolutionary. It is not a version improvement over the standard "rehab" - they threw the old model away and started new. This is how we are going to treat people for the next hundred years. This is visionary."
Another premise of the program is that it is the system around the client, in their lives, supporting them and helping them to create an amazing, new and vibrant life, that is the prescription and legacy that we can leave the client. The Seasons SFT Team works from admission to create an effective system of support and nurturance around the client in their lives after treatment. The Seasons Treatment Team is responsible for continuing to work with the client after they leave residential treatment to keep the system of support around the client vibrant, healthy and sober.
"I was worried about leaving treatment. I did not know if I would use again or not. But by the time I left, the Seasons Treatment Team had an amazing and full plan in place for me. They even came back home with me to make sure I was set up and could make contact with the local people who would be supporting me. They called me every week. They kept me accountable to the plan. This has been amazing for me."
Social and Biological families are encouraged and invited to participate as much as possible. One asset
of the program is the Family Teleconferencing Center, where family members from anywhere with an internet connection and webcam can hook up and participate the program. This allows family members, who cannot travel to our Southern California Campus, to participate in an amazing process blending high tech connections, the highest quality family therapists, and curriculum of unparalleled intensity and vision.
"The FTC was way cool . I had not seen my grandmother in New York in years, but there she was peering at me through space and talking about her father's alcohol ism.... I never knew. We were al l together there, 5 of us, my brother, my parents and grandmother, working through it together. Wow."
Based on our initial success and an intense interest from professionals, families and academia, an ongoing documentation of the program success is being prepared for peer review and presentation.
The Seasons SFT Program is led by renowned family therapist and author Dr. Debra Mandel and coordinated by Seasons Recovery Centers Executive Director Christopher Bathum.
